New York Law Journal honored Labaton Keller Sucharow partners Michael P. Canty and Carol C. Villegas as 2020 New York Trailblazers for being "agents of change."

While many former federal prosecutors join the white collar defense bar, Mike thought becoming a plaintiff’s lawyer made more sense.  “I was actually surprised that more people didn’t go from the U.S. Attorney’s Office to a plaintiff-side firm, because the work is quite similar.”  In both roles, he investigated fraud, built a case, and drafted a complaint.  Only now, it’s a civil lawsuit – not a criminal indictment.

When Carol moved to Labaton Keller Sucharow 12 years ago, the transition to prosecuting fraud cases on behalf of retirement fund clients was natural.  “We’re entrusted with making sure that their pension funds are protected from fraud.”  It is an important job and “one that I take very seriously.”
