NEW YORK (October 17, 2017) — Labaton Sucharow LLP announced today that Benchmark Litigation 2018 once again named the Firm a “Top Plaintiffs Firm” and recommended the Firm nationally and locally in New York and Delaware for its work in Securities Litigation as well as Corporate Governance and Shareholder Rights Litigation. As one of the top firms, Labaton Sucharow was noted as one of “those who have been held as the most dominant in their respective markets” over Benchmark’s research cycle. Among the individual attorney rankings, eight Labaton Sucharow partners were recognized as leading “Litigation Stars” for their work in securities litigation. Lauded for the Firm’s performance and service record, clients praised the attorneys, which earned the Firm its recognition as a go-to, recommended Firm in the securities plaintiffs bar.
Firm Chairman Lawrence A. Sucharow was recognized as a Litigation Star for spearheading the investigation into State Street alleging a decade-long scheme of overcharging bank customers in foreign exchange transactions. Peers concurred on the opinion that it showed “how seriously Labaton takes going to bat for these investors, and it also proves that Larry Sucharow…is still in the mix and still getting the settlements that have bite."
In recognition of one of the Firm’s major cases of 2016, including the long-running suit against biotechnology company, Amgen, which went all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court and resulted in a $95 million settlement, Benchmark Litigation dubbed Thomas A. Dubbs a “boots-on-the-ground guy,” retaining his both national and state statuses as Litigation Star by the publication.
Michael W. Stocker was also ranked nationally and locally as a Litigation Star. He represents institutional investors and consumers as co-chair of one of the Firm’s litigation teams and prosecutes securities, data privacy, antitrust, and consumer class actions.
New to the Litigation Star list this year is Firm partner Jonathan Gardner, who is acknowledged as “engaged and strategic,” and praised for his work on the Barrick Gold settlement, which resulted in a $140 million recovery. According to a peer, Gardner, who provided counsel in one of the Firm’s more “ambitious engagements” over the past year in the case against one of the largest gold mining companies in the world, "the Barrick case was made by the Labaton firm—not by the financial press and not by the stock exchange. The Firm followed the news on environmental problems, launched their own investigation, and discovered that the environmental problems on that project were not an accident. Eventually the Chilean government shut it down, and so it just became an $8 billion hole!"
Gardner’s work obtaining a $47 million settlement in the securities fraud case against Nu Skin Enterprises, a direct selling and multilevel marketing company that develops and sells personal and nutritional supplement packets, was also noted.
With more than 40 years of extensive litigation experience, Mark S. Arisohn focuses on prosecuting complex securities fraud cases on behalf of institutional investors, and he was recognized in securities for the seventh successive year and held his title as a Litigation Star.
Three of the Firm’s newest Whistleblower Representation Practice partners with decades of SEC enforcement experience, Steven J. Durham, Robert G. Wilson, and Timothy L. Warren also made Benchmark Litigation’s local Litigation Star list out of the Firm’s Washington, D.C. and Chicago offices.
Benchmark Litigation’s Under 40 Rising Stars Hot List, which honors partners under 40 with a track record of accomplishments, featured Firm partner Ned Weinberger earlier this year.
Since 2008, Benchmark Litigation continues to be the only publication focusing exclusively on U.S. litigation. Rankings result from the culmination of a six-month research period in which Benchmark researchers conduct interviews with litigators and their clients, in which recent casework handled by the firms is examined and sources are asked to offer their professional opinions on the attorneys practicing within their state or national practice areas.
