David J. Goldsmith speaks about what he finds to be useful for recent law school grads
Labaton Sucharow partner David J. Goldsmith was recently quoted in a Law360 article about what veteran attorneys now wished they knew upon graduation.
He said, "I wish I had had some practical background in negotiation with one's adversary. Much of day-to-day practice involves negotiation, whether it concerns discovery, motions, scheduling, and of course settlements. Knowing how to protect your client's interests while being reasonable and cooperative, all within the 'norms' and conventions of litigation, is an important skill that should be addressed in some form in law school. I also wish I knew that lawyers have to understand basic financial and accounting issues. Litigation is not just words; it's numbers too."
