Jailed UBS Tax Whistleblower Gets $104M IRS Award

Jordan A. Thomas comments on historic $104 million whistleblower award issued by the IRS program

Even though Birkenfeld is still serving a prison sentence, the historic award will push potential whistleblowers to provide information to law enforcement officials, said Jordan Thomas, head of the whistleblower practice at Labaton Sucharow LLP.

Most people with valuable information are not going to have the same level of criminal liability that Birkenfeld did, he added.

"There's no question that this award is historic and it will give people who have been on the fence motivation to come forward and report," Thomas said. "I do think that this is a case that transcends the IRS program."
