Jordan A. Thomas Named Whistleblower "Lawyer of the Year"
New York, NY – October 5, 2018 – Labaton Sucharow LLP is pleased to announce that Jordan A. Thomas, a principal architect of the SEC Whistleblower Program who established the nation’s first law practice exclusively focused on SEC whistleblowers, has been named a 2018 “Lawyer of the Year” by the Taxpayers Against Fraud Education Fund (“TAFEF”). The leading public advocacy group for whistleblowers presented Mr. Thomas with the prestigious award, citing his “record-setting accomplishments” and “service” to whistleblower representation and advocacy, at its Annual Conference & Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C. on October 4.
In bestowing the award, TAFEF recognized that several of Mr. Thomas’ cases have reached landmark settlements over the past year, including the largest ever award in the history of the SEC Whistleblower Program - $83 million to a group of whistleblowers for the successful $415 million enforcement action against Merrill Lynch. He also served as co-counsel for the largest ever tax whistleblower recovery in New York history, which was recently announced by New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood. In addition to the record-breaking awards and under Mr. Thomas’ leadership, the practice has helped the SEC recover more than $1 billion in monetary sanctions as a result of its clients’ whistleblower tips.
TAFEF is a public interest non-profit dedicated to fighting fraud against the government by incentivizing integrity. Through public-private partnerships, TAFEF advances the effectiveness of the False Claims Act and federal whistleblower programs to promote and protect the efficient use of taxpayer dollars.
The agency also noted “that Jordan has been a key resource for the TAFEF staff over the past year as we work to learn the substantive and procedural complexities of the SEC Whistleblower Program and endeavor to support TAFEF members who are engaged in this vital and dynamic practice area.”
“I am deeply honored to receive this extraordinary award. It is a wonderful thing when doing work you love is recognized by people you respect,” said Mr. Thomas.
