Labaton Sucharow has developed a holistic approach to professional development. We want our attorneys to succeed not only on our cases but in life and have created programs and initiatives that support this.
Working to develop our attorneys is a priority at Labaton Sucharow. We have always placed an importance on both hands-on and classroom training. In addition to our bi-weekly attorney breakfasts where groups share case development information, we have a substantive training curriculum. Labaton Sucharow University (L.S.U.) provides our attorneys with a comprehensive base of information that directly pertains to our cases. Courses are presented by Labaton attorneys, industry experts visiting our firm, via webcast through the New York City Bar Association and via webcast through Practicing Law Institute (PLI). At Labaton Sucharow we take seriously our commitment to the development and growth of our attorneys. In terms of mentoring, no single training session the mentee attends will replace the chance to develop a relationship and receive feedback from a mentor with more experience. We value honest and transparent relationships that encourage and support our attorneys.
Our formal mentor program provides new attorneys with an integration mentor and more seasoned attorneys with a mentor outside of his/her practice group. In addition to a Goal Setting Workshop for our associates and of counsel, additional mentoring commitments include attending outside networking events together, attending social events together and planning lunches and other informal meeting times.
Evaluations and Feedback
At Labaton Sucharow, our teams are structured so that there is constant interaction and communication between all team members. Partners are involved just as much as junior associates which creates an environment of continuous feedback. In addition to every day feedback, we have formal evaluation periods twice per year where more substantive feedback is provided and long-term potential is discussed. Attorney self-evaluations and goal setting plans are also requested and incorporated into the year-end evaluation discussions.
Diversity and Inclusion
We understand that different perspectives and ideas make both the process and results of what we do better. We value the varied experiences our colleagues bring to work each day and celebrate them. Our Diversity Initiatives permeate every aspect of our firm – from recruiting and training to policies and firm culture. We conduct regular training programs that address topics like Unconscious Gender Bias and Diversity & Inclusion.
Our Women’s Initiatives Committee provides opportunities for all the professional women at the firm. These include networking events, training sessions and a speaker’s series. In addition, the Committee monitors and recommends policy and process updates that help us to attract and retain successful women at all levels within the Firm. Past meetings have included a visit with the Oregon Attorney General, the author of the book, “The Ask for Business, for Philanthropy, for Everyday Living”, and a former Olympian.

Highlights of our community involvment include:
- Change for Kids (CFK): Change for Kids (CFK) rallies communities to provide a broad range of essential educational opportunities at under-resourced schools around New York City. Each year, Labaton Sucharow supports a local school through CFK by helping to provide educational field trips, fundraisers, and volunteer opportunities. Some of our top events include a 4th Grade Career Day and Book Drive Lunch, both of which we host at our office, a Winter Toy Drive, a yearly Change Jar Challenge, Guest Reader Visits to our sponsor school, and Story Love.
- American Heart Association’s Wall Street Run and Heart Walk: Each year, Labaton Sucharow participates in the American Heart Association’s Wall Street Run and Heart Walk. With over 450 Heart Walks and Runs across the nation, these events are a fun way to promote healthy living and help fund the life-saving mission of the American Heart Association.

We are always looking for talented students to join our Summer Associate program. Our goal is to create an interactive learning experience that is challenging, rewarding and fun.
Labaton Sucharow visits a number of New York City law schools for on-campus interviews in the Fall. At other law schools we work with the career services departments to collect resumes from those students interested in our securities and antitrust litigation practice groups. Our program exposes you to the real day-to-day workings at a law firm – allowing you to gain experience at all levels of the litigation process and interact with all of our professionals, from paralegals to investigators (some formerly with the FBI) to junior and senior attorneys.
Our assignment coordinators will ensure that you have the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to some of the most important, complex securities and antitrust cases currently pending in the U.S., including conducting factual and legal research, drafting memoranda of law and case reports, and attending depositions, oral arguments, and client meetings.
Examples of recent summer associate work assignments include:
- Working on an Opposition of Motion to Stay before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals
- Updating the annual ABA Survey of State Class Action Law, resulting in a writing credit in the book
- Synthesizing case research and drafting case reports on proprietary cases still in development
Meaningful feedback will occur during and after each assignment and more formally at the end of the summer program.
Summer Associates will participate in our bi-weekly department breakfast sessions, Labaton Sucharow University (L.S.U.) training presentations, and Summer Associate-specific training sessions. Continued learning and development are a very important part of our culture.
Our Associate Development Committee (ADC) works hard to ensure that there are opportunities to socialize in addition to the work assignments, such as wine and whiskey tastings, ice cream socials, bowling, and ping pong outings, just to name a few.
We are always looking for litigation superstars that want to join the Firm. Our partners are closely involved in each associate’s professional development and work-life balance. As noted in the Professional Development section, our associates receive feedback on an ongoing basis and are also provided with opportunities twice during the year to formally meet to discuss professional milestones and goals. Our formal mentor program provides one-on-one professional guidance and relationship-building opportunities, and our Associate Development Committee (ADC) promotes open lines of communication between all seniority levels. Many of our current staff members have been with the firm for five, 10, and 20 years.
