NEW YORK (January 25, 2017) – For the fourth time, Labaton Sucharow LLP has once again been selected by Law360 as a Class Action Group of the Year. Winning firms “racked up victories in litigation…to make their mark among clients and throughout the legal industry.”
Now in its eighth year, the Practice Group of the Year series garnered more than 600 submissions in 2016, with winners selected across 34 practice areas.
In an article profiling the Firm, Law360 stated that the Firm leverages, “its laser focus on class action litigation and hard-hitting investigations unit,” and its “intense scrutiny of the facts before a case is filed,” distinguishes it from the pack. Notable work on cases that helped the Firm clinch the win included litigation against State Street Corporation, which resulted in a $300 million recovery. According to Firm Chairman and leading partner on the case, Lawrence A. Sucharow, the “win-win” case was one “where rational counsel on both sides can reach an extraordinary agreement. And it was also a win for the court system because we didn’t have motion after motion before the court.”
In another significant case against global gold mining company, Barrick Gold Corporation, which resulted in a $140 million recovery for the class, lead Firm partner Jonathan Gardner noted the success was “…a testament to our investigation department and how we really dig in on these investigations…Tracking down former employees was complicated by the fact that it took place in a foreign country and the conduct was in the construction of a mine that was no longer operational. Figuring out who was in a position to know, tracking them down and getting past language barriers was challenging, but our investigation department did a great job.”
