Firm partners Serena Hallowell and Carol C. Villegas have been named Rising Stars in Benchmark Litigation’s inaugural 2016 Under 40 Hot List, which honors attorneys under 40 at the partner level with a track record of accomplishments. Serena and Carol focus on prosecuting complex securities fraud cases on behalf of institutional investors.
Serena was instrumental in securing a $48 million recovery against pharma giant CVS (Medoff v. CVS Caremark Corporation). She also helped secure a $41.5 million settlement against a global telecommunications company (In re NII Holdings, Inc. Securities Litigation) and was one of the partners involved in securing a $140 million settlement against Barrick Gold (In re Barrick Gold Securities Litigation), one of the largest gold mining companies in the world.
Carol notably played a key role in reaching favorable settlements of $15 million in a securities case against international retail apparel company Aeropostale (The City of Providence v. Aeropostale, Inc. et al.), as well as $9 million in a case against healthcare communications provider Vocera (In re Vocera Communications, Inc. Securities Litigation). Her most recent argument in the case against Vocera resulted in a ruling from the bench, denying defendants motion to dismiss in that case.
Carol was also named to New York Law Journal’s inaugural Top Women in Law 2016 list, which focused on work over the past year and honors “accomplished female attorneys in the New York legal community who represent excellence in private practice, corporate counsel work, public interest law, legal education, and the judiciary.” The publication also sought women who have made a significant contribution to the law or legal community. Carol was one of 30 women chosen for the 2016 list of winners.
