Reputation Matters.
A Practice Rooted in Community
Since the Firm’s inception more than 45 years ago, our founding partners have infused our practice with a robust commitment to the community and the desire to use our experience and expertise to help those who cannot help themselves.
Indeed, the Firm is a long-time supporter of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law, which was formed at the request of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 to secure equal justice through the rule of law. Senior Firm partner Ed Labaton is a member of the Committee’s board of directors.
Labaton Sucharow was asked by the Committee to evaluate potential nominees to the United States Supreme Court. Firm lawyers also participated in the “Election Protection” program, a lawyer-sponsored voter rights initiative, during the 2004 presidential election, and traveled to Ohio to help coordinate a nationwide effort to ensure that citizens were provided fair and equal access to polling sites.
Individually, our attorneys serve in a variety of pro bono and community service capacities. For example, one of our lawyers has been appointed Guardian ad Litem in several housing court actions in which mentally ill tenants faced eviction. Another Labaton attorney received a Volunteer and Leadership Award from a tenants' advocacy organization for his work defending the rights of city residents and preserving something as fundamental as their sense of public safety and home. Labaton Sucharow also performs community mediation work for the New York Center for Interpersonal Development, where attorneys mediate and co-mediate conflicts in a variety of areas. In addition, Labaton Sucharow works with the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, an arts-related legal aid organization that provides legal services to the arts community, including most recently representing a New York City artist in a dispute with his gallery.
Whether our work involves crucial public policy issues, international news events, or individuals in need of counsel, our pro bono service underlies our commitment to professionalism.
