Michael W. Stocker Elected to The American Law Institute

NEW YORK (June 28, 2016) – Labaton Sucharow LLP is pleased to announce that Firm partner Michael W. Stocker has been elected as a member of The American Law Institute (ALI or the Institute), the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law.

Founded in 1923, ALI grew out of concern following a study conducted by a committee of prominent legal minds which pointed out two chief defects in American law—uncertainty and complexity—that produced a “general dissatisfaction with the administration of justice.” The committee recommended the formation of a lawyers’ organization with the mission to improve the law and its administration. To date, ALI’s mission has remained “to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice, and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work.”

As a member, Stocker will work alongside a prestigious and scholarly group of lawyers, judges, and law professors to provide perspective, insight, and guidance on a variety of legal topics relating to projects undertaken by ALI that serve to clarify the law. According to ALI, many of its projects that have resulted in published works have been “accorded an authority greater than that imparted to any legal treatise, an authority more nearly comparable to that accorded to judicial decisions.”

“I’m honored to join this group of professionals who have demonstrated excellence in the law, and I look forward to playing a part in continuing ALI’s work,” said Stocker.
