Martis Alex talks about the importance of setting expectations and communication
Law firms put in serious time and money to hire the best crop of new associates. According to Firm partner Martis Alex, associates need to know exactly what’s expected of them if they are to perform their best.
“But it goes both ways,” Alex said. “It’s very important for the associates to be able to speak freely, and it’s very important to have a work environment where we communicate with each other and share ideas. You never know who’s going to have the next good idea.”
She added, “It’s important to have young associates who have enough confidence to express their thoughts and weigh in,” Alex said. “Take them to the lunch, include them in the call…They’re from a different generation, with different experiences. They have different life experience that they can bring to the table.”
When it came to quality over quantity, she said, ““I don’t see them as two different things. I want both — I want quality, and when it’s necessary, I want quantity. Not either or.”
